Steve O'Connell, the current Conservative London Assembly Member for Croydon and Sutton, was last night re-selected to stand as the candidate for the May 2016 elections to the Greater London Assembly (GLA).
Steve is a born and bred South Londoner raised on the Bellingham Estate, who attended Brockley Grammar School. After a career in banking, Steve became a Councillor in Croydon in 2002, was Deputy Leader of the Council from 2006 - 2008. He was re-elected for Kenley ward in the local elections 2014 and is the Cabinet Member for Finance and Treasury.
Steve was elected as GLA Member for Croydon and Sutton in 2008 and is at present serving his second term. He is Deputy Chair of the Planning Committee, a member of the transport committee and a MOPAC Non- Executive Advisor to the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. He has a keen interest in public safety, regeneration, social mobility, protecting the environment and animal welfare.
He is a lifelong supporter of Crystal Palace FC and is a Trustee of the CPFC Foundation.
Upon being re-selected, Steve said: "It is an honour to have represented Croydon and Sutton on the GLA since 2008 and I am humbled that I have been trusted with the task of running for a third term. A Labour Mayor and GLA member would be a disaster for Croydon and Sutton. Ken was a Zone 1 Mayor and Labour are a Zone 1 Party. I think we can win and we must win to get the best deal to move Croydon and Sutton forward."
