It's welcome that some Lib Dems have, belatedly, acknowledged that car parking in Sutton High Street, especially around the station, is not adequate. But concerns remain about whether any new spaces will actually be delivered.
Conservative Councillor for Sutton South, Tony Shields, said: “It's good news that some in the Council appear to have woken up to the difficulty people have with parking in Sutton, particularly around the station.
“It's a shame it's taken them this long to acknowledge that there's a problem but I remain skeptical given that the same councillors also supported the sale of the Brighton Road car park without making alternative provision immediately available. Some even said we had enough parking as it is.
“I've long supported better car parking in and around the station – indeed we were promised this before the Brighton Road car park was closed. I reaffirm my support for this, but would call for an honest discussion about parking in Sutton. We mustn't forget it was the Council who closed Brighton Road without planning for more parking, and we cannot allow the Lib Dems to make these claims without being held to account.”
