In the last two days, there have been two accidents at Hackbridge, apparently caused by confusion over the 'courtesy crossings', one involving a child.
In the Autumn of last year, the Liberal Democrats on Sutton Council introduced 'courtesy crossings' as part of the regeneration of Hackbridge corner. These crossings made it difficult to determine where to cross and required pedestrains to make eye contact with drivers to make them stop. Such a layout was confusing for pedestrians and drivers
Sutton Conservatives led a massive campaign in October 2014, headed by parliamentary candidate Matthew Maxwell Scott alongside road safety campaigners like Tracey Collins, to re-introduce proper crossings at Hackbridge. Hundreds of people completed our survey, which found that a massive 95% of people were against the disastrous road layout.
Part of the campaign was a warning that unless proper crossings were put back, there would be accidents, perhaps involving children with a school so close by. Luckily, no-one was seriously hurt this time, but we cannot accept such a dangerous risk to our children's safety.
It is time to put back proper crossings in Hackbridge.
