Sutton Conservatives have welcomed new figures showing that the number of people in Carshalton & Wallinton and Sutton & Cheam claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance fell to 651 and 600 respectively, down 432 (40%) on Sept 2014 and down 1255 (66%) on Sept 2010 in Carshalton & Wallington, and down 205 (25%) on Sept 2014 and down 772 (56%) on Sept 2010.
This month’s figures show that employment rose 140,000 this quarter, with the employment rate reaching 73.6%, the highest on record. The unemployment rate fell to 5.4%, its lowest rate since early 2008, with nearly 200,000 fewer unemployed people than last year. Wages continue to rise at an average of 3%.
These remarkable figures show that this Government is on the side of working people. Since 2010, there are 920,000 more women in work and the employment rate of young people who have left full-time education is at 73.9%, the highest level in more than 10 years.
We are delivering economic security and opportunity with more people in work than ever before, and strong growth in wages. There are almost 360,000 more people in work compared to this time last year – 80% of which were full time jobs.
These figures show that our welfare reforms are supporting people off benefits and into work. There are now 1 million fewer people claiming the main out of work benefits than in 2010, and over 2 million more people in work. The number of long-term unemployed people has fallen by more than 25% in the last year to 526,000 – the lowest level in 6 years.
This Government is building a society with opportunity at its heart; where people know if they work hard, they can really succeed. We will continue to reform welfare, tackle deep poverty and build a stronger economy with the hard work of the British people – working through our long-term economic plan to finish the job of securing our economic future.
Paul Scully, Conservative MP for Sutton & Cheam said: "With wages continuing to rise and fewer people relying on Jobseeker’s Allowance, today’s figures are great news for people who want to work hard and get on in Sutton.
"With good jobs being created by businesses like Subsea 7, these figures show there is more financial security for people in work, and more families with the security and stability of a regular pay packet.
‘These strong results are down to the hard work and determination of people here in Sutton, and demonstrate the success of the Conservatives’ one nation approach and clear economic plan. We need to keep working though that plan - supporting firms, increasing training and providing more free childcare for working parents, as well as introducing a National Living Wage – so that everyone can succeed and achieve their full potential."
