Sutton & Cheam MP Paul Scully welcomed news that five charities in his constituency will be receiving over £35,000 of funding from Central Government to help them through the Covid-19 Pandemic.
In a year of unprecedented disruption, residents in Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park have relied upon our charities more than ever. A crucial part of the Government’s response to COVID-19 has been the £750 million support package to ensure voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors across the country can continue their vital work during this difficult period. The scheme is one of the most generous in the world and by far the most generous in Europe for the charity sector.
Over 13,000 charities across the country have received funding to continue their vital work, including household names such as St John Ambulance, NSPCC, Age UK, Barnardo’s, Fareshare, and the British Red Cross, as well as thousands of smaller local charities.
In Sutton however, five charities have been allocated a total of £38,345 of funding from the £200m Coronavirus Community Support Fund, including over £20,000 to Age UK Sutton. They are:
Cruse Bereavement Care (£9,500)
Nainai Manimekalai Welfare Association (£1,250)
The Womens' Centre Sutton (£2,882)
Refugee and Migrant Network Sutton (£3,155)
Age UK Sutton (£21,558)
Mr Scully, commenting, said,
“It’s great news that the vital work of some of the most important local charities are getting recognition and support this Conservative Government so that our vulnerable people in Sutton can get the help they need.
“I am particularly pleased that The Womens’ Centre has had funding allocated to it given the sharp increase in demand for their services during lockdown. It is also vital that Age UK continues to get help for the work they do to assist our elderly in the borough during this difficult time.”
Cllr Jane Pascoe, Sutton Conservatives Lead Member for People, said
“The charities that have received this funding are at the front line of dealing with the most vulnerable members of our society.
“In a time where is it so important that the voluntary sector gets the tools it needs to carry out its work, I’m pleased to see the Government have done their bit to help these Sutton organisations“.
