At tonight's Full Council, Sutton Conservatives will be voting in favour of a motion to remove all cladding that presents a fire risk and remediation of unsafe wall systems on the walls of existing residential buildings of any height.
The End Our Cladding Scandal campaign was set up after the tragic events of the Grenfell fire and calls on the government to act to end the scandal of residents trapped in private residential blocks with dangerous Grenfell style cladding.
A person’s home should be where they feel happy and safe and we should do everything we can to ensure this is the case. As the Conservative Council group we would like to recognise the work that End Our Cladding Scandal has done as well as The Richmond House Residents group, and other groups in the Borough that represent affected leaseholders.
We will be supporting this motion and hope to work closely with the Sutton Council administration to ensure the residents of this borough are safe in their homes and are supported by the council.
Conservative Group Leader Cllr Tom Drummond said,
“Every person should feel safe in their home. Sadly we know all too well this isn’t always the case and this is something we simply have to address. I will never forget listening to the experiences of the residents of The Hamptons after the fire in Sept ‘19. We need to put politics to one side and work together to try to ensure everyone lives in a happy and safe home.”
Conservative Housing Spokesperson Cllr Catherine Gray said,
“Since the scenes of devastation from the Grenfell tragedy were seen around the world, and the reality of the dangers of combustible cladding on blocks became apparent, leaseholders have been living in limbo, waiting for a resolution that won’t bankrupt them, and will ensure their personal safety.
“A solution needs to be found that protects leaseholders from the emotional and financial impact of this problem, and I welcome cross party support and collaboration both in this Borough, and Nationwide to tackle the cladding scandal.”
